Temporary Jet Blast Fencing: A Robust Solution for Airport Safety
The Temporary Jet Blast Fence developed by Maltaward Barriers Ltd is a proprietary
system designed to provide fast, effective protection against jet blast hazards in airport
construction zones. Engineered with modularity and safety in mind, this fencing solution
addresses the critical need for temporary barriers that can withstand high-velocity
exhaust from aircraft engines while remaining easy to install, relocate, and maintain.
One of the standout features of the Maltaward system is its modular construction,
which allows for rapid on-site assembly. This not only speeds up deployment but also
minimizes the risk of Foreign Object Debris (FOD), as the design avoids small fittings that
could become loose or hazardous. The fencing units are mounted onto TVCBs
(Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers), which are bolted together in a continuous wall.
From a compliance standpoint, the system is built to meet airport design parameters
and tolerances, particularly in relation to wind loading. The design incorporates
calculations based on a maximum jet blast velocity of 31.3 m/s (approximately 70
mph) at a distance of 50 meters from aircraft exhausts. These figures align with the ICAO
Doc 9157 Part 2 – Aerodrome Design Manual, ensuring the fence meets international
safety standards for taxiways, aprons, and hold bays.
Installation is streamlined and efficient. The fencing system is delivered and installed by
Maltaward’s in-house teams. Mesh panels and frames are securely packed in custom
stillages for safe transport. Using equipment such as Moffett forklifts or Hiabs, the redand-white painted concrete blocks are placed and connected with high tensile bolts.
The fence panels are then clipped into place manually, followed by a thorough inspection
and handover.
